Even in the worm that crawls in the earth there glows a divine spark. Whenyou slaughter a creature, you slaughter God. -Isaac Bashevis Singer,Writer, Nobel laureate (1904-1991)
I read the first half and thought about how each thing God creates truly reflects who he is. I don't know who this Isaac Bashevis is and quite honestly if we were to take him literally from this singular quote then I would have to say that he didn't believe in God or he was sure we as human beings could destroy God altogether. Honestly, the slaughter part wasn't my focus..... Although I believe the senseless killing of God's creation causes God sadness in the very least.
It's hard with quotes sometimes to know the true intent of the words... because they are extracted from a larger picture. Be it a conversation, a book, thoughts in a journal....The quote from LM Montgomery I posted about the new day with no mistakes... if you read the story or watch the movie, you see all the negative that was surrounding it... means more.
I nearly flipped out this past weekend over a bug that was on the ceiling above my head. I was lying in my bunk and there was this critter. The other people in the room told me to kill it and I wouldn't.... I'm sure they don't understand why because I haven't explained it. I won't kill anything that isn't harming me or someone else. Scaring is a story altogether different, afterall it was just a bug.
Why won't I? Because God made it, that's why.

I will have to say that I do not agree with that quote. God's handiwork is shown through His creation, but when it dies, God lives on regardless!
EEEW Worms.
Interesting quote and thought. I think there is a danger of pantheism depending on the larger context of the quote, but I do believe all of God's creation points to Him. I have the utmost respect for your not killing the bug. You are a better woman than I. Spark of divinity or no, I am unwilling to let the spideys continue to prance across my living room floor...they got to go.
iT'S THE WOOLY WORM!!! i have recently had a lot of people telling me that they bite now that he crawled all over everyone..don't know for a fact though..
My nephew brought one of those little guys in the house the other day. ;o) (For some reason, the computer wouldn't let me check your blog yesterday, so I'm checking it now!)
It's a good quote (though like someone said, it teeters on the brink of pantheism), but it may have an echo of truth. All life is created by God. Although He cannot be diminished, something of what He has wrought is gone when a life ends, and perhaps more so when we snuff out (or "slaughter" as Isaac says) those who just happen to cross our paths.
Regardless of whether the quote is heresy or not, it was very cool of you to spare the fuzzy.
That's not my hand, I didn't even touch it, I just took the pictures... and man was it funny when D let it crawl on her!!!
Feather, I'm the "anonymous" above your post. What's going on with my identity in blogland?!? --Slacker
