road kill

In the last year I have almost hit several animals. Two nights ago it was a doe, she was headed across my road when she paused and then bounded off into the field to the right.

There've been at least two racoons, one oppossum, four or so cats, three dogs, four deer, five squirrels and a whole host of little froggies (in the rain--which of course is when they choose to cross the road).

Why do they do that?! What's so wonderful about the other side of the road?! And if that's where home is, why in the world can't they stay on that SIDE!?

Good grief is it that great that they'd risk their lives?

I have had DOZENS of frogs jump in front of me lately. It's like I have a target on the front of my car! It always makes me a little sad to squash one. It makes me feel worse when the little guy in the back seat freaks out...

Awwww, well I try not to think about it... mostly because it would crush me to kill an animal intentionally, so I just figure since those no crunching sound it didn't happen (yes I know, they are squishy so they won't crunch--dont remind me).

A friend of mine has this theory that it is some sort of right of passage ritual that elevates the animal to adult hood!

Good one, DD. ;o) I think animals cross the road because people have built roads in their territory. They're trying to show us who's boss and that they're not intimidated by some ol' road. ;o)

I like the rite of passage deal... and I guess it sounds true that we are in their territory... too sad they get smacked down now and then.

I'll break for any animal, except oppossums.

Ever see the car insurance commercial with the two squirrels high fiving each other after running a car off the road? There may be something to that one...

Y'all are missing the "life imitating art" bit... they're taking Frogger way too literally!

Or, we could reason metaphorically. All of our lives are trips across the road. We don't know what's on the other side for sure, but we do know that we'll have to die to get there. Yeah, that's it, it's all just a morality play for us dumb humans...
